Welcome to Contextual Studies. This paper will introduce you to some theoretical approaches to understanding art and its context. Art is a social activity, it cannot (though some have tried) be separated from cultural, historical and political factors. Understanding the context in which art is made and viewed, it can be argued, enhances our experience of art.
For each of the topics there will be a lecture/presentation, discussion, some readings and a short written assignment for you to complete. This Northnet site will always have the information for each topic uploaded for your use and reference.
